June 13 was our day. The Palma and Inca groups arrived by train and we decided to try the old clay courts where Nadal developed his talent. To our surprise, Nadal was there practicing. He recently won the French Open, but had been defeated in a grasscourt tournament due to exhaustion. The missionaries watched him practice and then played for a hour. When Nadal was ready to leave, the missionaries greeted him and he allowed us to photograph him with all our Mallorcan team.Colleen Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03878957817941850892noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379467323210447889.post-43992249235144002782011-06-13T15:03:00.002-04:002011-06-13T15:07:29.611-04:00Cleaning the Inca Branch<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8vpwqhNMomFZ1zpxrMz6DvzPNQ-xcov_LmxNStfbibSeexeBazyCLHi1rpmd6VXISHCd8WsaOWATARDYZ1qiOyXKmvYkVhTx9voSlCYPwsXA7cRTZ6vsv1LmNjlUezpkZ_axF4s5KwF13/s320/Roger%252C+Iker+sweep+and+clean.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5617783012359452290" />
Here are more photos of the Inca Branch workers preparing with gusto the new branch for worship. For six months the branch has met in a rented temporary building. Saturday, June 4th, branch members gathered to move furniture and clean the new facility. Two elders left the Palma area, one sister the Inca area, and one elder from the Manacor area. Even the Menorca elders were given new assignments. Sister Thompson was assigned to serve with Sister Martin for the day until her new companion flew to the island from Barcelona. In order to accommodate the waiting elders and be a companion to a sister for the day, Sister Thompson had to leave Elder Thompson at home in Manacor. She drove to Inca, picked up the sisters, continued to Palma to meet the elders. One sister and three elders left to fly to Barcelona. While three elders and a sister waited for their new companions, we enjoyed some sightseeing together. Valldemossa, Soller, and the Port de Soller were beckoning to us. Sister Thompson drove the little Opel filled with missionaries to these exotic spots.Colleen Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03878957817941850892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379467323210447889.post-1080991273374907452011-06-10T14:53:00.003-04:002011-06-10T15:05:40.408-04:00Mallorca District meeting is our last with these angels.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWIxjUQwCso5HaVB0ebR09orkaUExUE47EHtzED2tvZU3BW11jqnWfUrUHFz1yBTSNpeSwDOtsWumFBxxr_CSkh6PfMeGGExmkzh5OC0tXVf87V-aBeeJKc0f1McqPfYklyiLQQlaBSh7t/s320/Just+before+transfers+and+big+changes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5616669225722140434" />
May continued to be a busy time, driving elders and sisters to appointments far from their assigned cities. In April, Elders Hadley and Thompson in Palma invited us to an evening with their Nigerian investigator and his family. As soon as we came to the door, we felt like we were back in Africa. Owen said to us, "You are Welcome", a phrase we heard often when we served our first mission in Accra, Ghana. This dear family was most welcoming. They had prepared a large meal with fufu, rice, and a spice soup. We prepared a notebook with conversion stories about the Nigerian and Ghanaian members for Owen. We wanted him to know of his wonderful heritage through church members in West Africa.Colleen Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03878957817941850892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379467323210447889.post-2963782667471694422011-03-23T13:36:00.002-04:002011-03-23T13:49:31.340-04:00A feminine touch has been added to our zone<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirUPH9SMvdAdcdP7JkE9dW419tJYfA9a_o2vGAaa1D1sPdMv4X1E1LdQ6D1Vtp9iU7sMOxqimz6LgzNcXegiZxJQnzl5yLXxuI3RVd4X8OaJNKvZoxCbGfXAcwkRyIrtkObvQ_EY_wsSC8/s320/warriors+on+the+courts.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587333759569811442" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDsTlHJTq331iBK_oRuYzieqgYHeQMXCaieHIOlCW34lN1ddcHRHx2EjRtmD5cUOQ4ZdwZ8znr_eauj5-c8yULQI4_WNH095_rRyZQWAonr9S3UYQXg1DHDCI3RF5QWYlnLb0zIzubiHQT/s320/Baleares+Zone+Conf.+Mar.18%252C2011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587333754180196386" />
During February, los Thompson had the assignment to find a piso (apartment) in Inca. President Hinckley was going to send us some more missionaries. The Inca Branch was particularly grateful to hear of this plan. After finding a piso owned by a member, we brought two lovely young sisters to fill it--Hermanas Martin and Bennion. Having these sisters here assigned to Inca makes life more manageable for the Manacor elders. They can concentrate on their own area and allow the sister to perform miracles in Inca.
February has been a memorial month for Los Thompson. We have been working with a couple from Hamburg Germany, the wife was a member, but her husband, Rolf was not. We met them on their vacation in Mallorca last February, 2010. When they left for Hamburg in March 2010, we encouraged Rolf to read The Book of Mormon. Bro. Thompson bore his witness of its truthfulness and I wrote my testimony to him in an email. When they returned in November, we began our visits again, without too much progress. We decided to give up, but Bro. Scharsig became serious about studying the Book of Mormon. Elders Egan and Greep joined us in our meetings with them. They encouraged him to listen to his feelings. That made the difference. He accepted a baptismal date of February 19th.Elder Greep did the baptizing--in German, no less with Brother Thompson's coaching. The following day, Brother Thompson confirmed him in German. Pictured are elders Egan, Greep,and Farley with Rolf Scharsig. These ruins are likely to be 3000 years old, similar to the Stone Henge in Great Britian. The first could have been a place of safety when invaders came to shore. The second is part of an small pueblo where a group of island inhabitants lived. These are both near the town of Arta. Augusto's friend Marty, a Mallorquin was our guide and teacher. He became acquainted with some of the employees, inviting them to attend our English class. One employee, Iris, accepted the invitation. From the first time I saw Iris, I thought she might also be interested in learning about the gospel of Jesus Christ. She was a good English student who eventually became a good gospel student. She knew of the Mormons in Uruguay and felt comfortable with them. Her baptism was held in Manacor on January 29th. She is pictured with branch member Ashley, the elders Egan and Greep, and Los Thompson.Colleen Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03878957817941850892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379467323210447889.post-6961944813531320642011-02-12T11:32:00.003-04:002011-02-12T11:42:21.943-04:00Three King's Day<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUNeFYASY8VTldd6jLuKVlr-Md6uYAnWGE3_YGnMMcSNE7y3PkAKLUom8n4A1tRZVCmsQRt9DKSnPPpv19W8owi95IH_idk3Omax70Hi9rcLGX37JsW5-MhiqWkSkG9JMtFdVsMFhTlESx/s320/Three+Kings+Day+in+Colonia+Sant+Jordi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5572828862568722802" />
We were invited to visit with the Scharsigs, our friends from Germany, on Spain's holiday, Three King's Day, Jan. 6th. We watched four boats come to shore, each containing a Wise Man led by a person representing the star. They landed to the applause of a large crowd and to a band playing a welcoming selection. With a large parade of people dressed as guards to the Kings, they made their way to the Catholic Church in the center of Colonia St.Jordi. The Kings paid respects to a woman representing Mary carrying the baby Jesus. Gifts were given to children who attended. It seems to me to be a worthwhile holiday where Bible stories are reinacted and remembered.Colleen Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03878957817941850892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379467323210447889.post-56475277557602556402011-02-12T11:08:00.004-04:002011-02-12T11:31:43.528-04:00<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_OwFIvXECjy9Uq7nmFuTSciINe9lq_1CsL869S0h15B3DiNS9Fe7rJDobOxOv0jfk3wCl68s5P9foFT9ONGFuul5GWIZlMn3atK9zyYFZUcFb8QVi5E2GrY0CuA4Ll0U-WpuLxCUTg_yZ/s320/Elders+in+front+of+church-Menorca.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5572824861274778690" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzjwzdpxA7REE90Em9dnEyihXkOKwKVlKT1mGJKzUJb1-vOSwdZF2qlJSMj-GgxDE5vBNdFgtFC3jJ_ikqZ4LyK1ffEivhCGrhh1bzKR_70xR9h-41wAArk6NIIXXvol7_7r9fRnc9i9Yj/s320/Ferry+to+Menorca.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5572824859010696226" />
Los Thompson had an adventure over New Year's Eve (Noche Vieja - old night). The elders in Menorca were moving to a new apartment where they had to buy supplies for the kitchen and bath,and put up light fixtures themselves. We decided this was a good time to visit them so we could give them a hand. We took a ferry boat from Alcudia, driving our car onto the ship. It was an hour's ride to the city of Ciudella, a port city on Menorca. We drove to Mahon at the other end of the island where we met the elders. They are shown standing in front of the branch chapel, a lovely space on a very nice street.Colleen Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03878957817941850892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379467323210447889.post-10664271647431076822011-01-08T16:34:00.002-04:002011-01-08T16:43:13.790-04:00Inca Branch performs for senior center<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWqsxOrbnaJbVSHABHAB-3TsRh5CnDlkq6ZEzJ8yC2XQHEK7CDFvGEGEY9j46G0osTigyVLT24lAk4NtVuOXryg_2T1eZDczVqbaJjyB37Oh7tCAt9W0ACiztrG0lynNinDyfZZy7cMgwL/s320/Inca+performs+well.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5559918423306063202" />
Combining all forces from the Inca Branch--the Primary, the Relief Society, and a choir--the members performed a puppet show of the Nativity with Christmas songs interspersed. The Baleares elders are elated to have two Spaniards be baptized in Manacor. The Palma elders--Bennington and Cannel--first contacted Augosto on the street. She needed to complete some puppets for the Inca Primary who would be practicing for a puppet show performance of Esther. At the same time the Inca Relief Society was finishing up a project, making lap quilts for a senior center. Sister T. had to quilt one small lap quilt so that the sister in Inca could sew the border later that evening. Time was running out! So she asked Brother T. if he could possibly quilt while she made puppets. He consented, set up the frame in a unique manner and went to work. Sister T. kept threading needles and he kept making square knots! What a team! The quilt was delivered to the Relief Society just in time.Colleen Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03878957817941850892noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379467323210447889.post-34969741574206989672010-12-08T16:52:00.002-04:002010-12-08T17:12:56.207-04:00Manacor Primary performs with songs and scripturess<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1JPUBgCwZRYsivevgcE-gyNBTon-0f9sf7J5kCm4CMCxhB0ofpVEEePjbXkkxH60tvBH1kl9hKRSRhna_T-xkRvGhgmn-EbDUjfWw-w4OcKC0-XrKd5FM_ZAoXizOg5yOLQYWto9UgCJX/s320/Manacor+Primary.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548422423020335650" />
When Sis. Thompson visited the Primary one Sunday, she found that they had difficulty staying on tune as they sang their Primary songs. So with the help of the priesthood who moved their class to another room, the Primary children began practicing with the keyboard in the chapel. One of the older students could play one hand with one of the numbers, so Sister Thompson played the left hand and the two were able to accompany together. After two months of practicing,the Primary presented a fine program with scriptures, talks and wonderful singing. The members attending enjoyed every minute of their performance.Colleen Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03878957817941850892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379467323210447889.post-45490157801451647932010-12-08T16:41:00.003-04:002010-12-08T16:52:33.236-04:00A mini CCM was held in Palma for our Zone<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrK9th7td9bsDjGzH-L6AZo6HT64oX9VIDm5DuaZYJIJTSpbtAl772e0mAqOcYMM7wVsg2jwaO407dmLdRPGzvN0-ZU877m2mN8wz6iagcQ5FEKTudjklIcvj9fto_n6LPPS5jdJXKxWw5/s320/Zone+Conference+Training.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548417162326507538" />
Here is the Baleares Zone who have just completed two days of training by President and Sister Hinckley. We are all looking forward to putting into practice the new ideas shared at this occasion. It is always good to see the elders who are serving on the island of Menorca--Elder Bajanas and Elder Rhead. They are the only two elders there and are not able to join us on a weekly basis as our district meetings.Colleen Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03878957817941850892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3379467323210447889.post-57415976687777357032010-12-08T16:27:00.002-04:002010-12-08T16:41:40.696-04:00Senior Couples gather in Barcelona for Training<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJD1BVMpiceMMRHsrIK6wpEcvB2l5oDJHEpFE3FKB3WCTxZqZUZ4_7YawZZEYhv1jsmdWy37yquyRAi4SHzKYSxaXqi9dB7cG0QLFmcQSgxHGnPY_hiOG3_84GQbtShcRm9L16CS60cgDY/s320/Senior+couples+in+Barcelona+Espana+Mission.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548414361521056162" />
All the Baleares Zone flew to Barcelona for a training with Elder Teixeria from the Quorum of Seventy. Los Thompson were so thrilled to enjoy the spiritual training as well as time with the other senior couples who live in Barcelona, the Hadleys, the Lunds, and the Belnaps. The Hadleys showed us the Young Adult Center where they are assigned, explaining all the activities that happen there. In addition, they shared their apartment with us for two days. The Lunds gave us supplies to take back to Mallorca and the Belnaps fed us and all the other missionaries gathered there. We are grateful to know such hardworking and dedicated seniors.Colleen Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03878957817941850892noreply@blogger.com0
